Vince the Rhino was Poached and Killed at a Zoo in Paris, France

Vince the Rhino Poached in a Zoo | Meat Your Future

Vince, a young four year old white rhinoceros, was brutally poached and killed yesterday — at a zoo in Paris, France no less.

The poachers broke into the zoo and removed his horn with a chainsaw. They left his second horn still attached and did not poach the other two rhinos in the enclosure, possibly due to the poachers’ equipment malfunctioning.

If this could happen in the relative security of a zoo, what hope is there for the remaining free-living animals in the wild?

Regarding just rhinos, according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF):

  1. The number of rhinos poached in South Africa alone increased 9,000% since 2007;
  2. About 96% of the black rhino population was lost due to poaching between 1970 and 1992; and
  3. Southern white rhinos (like Vince) were once thought to be extinct, but a small population was discovered in 1895.

Rhinoceroses are majestic, prehistoric animals who have been around for millions of years, long before humans even existed. But will they survive us?

While these violent killings strike us like a senseless and unnecessary tragedy, let’s remember that — because we have no biological need whatsoever to consume any animal foods — the killing of countless billions of other animals used for food (whether cows, fishes, pigs, chickens or other species) is equally senseless and unnecessary, and is also wrecking immense global environmental devastation.

So, if you think it’s wrong to harm animals unnecessarily, then in addition to standing-up for endangered species like rhinos, consider aligning your own values with your daily actions and live vegan. It’s the very least we can do.
